Shoveling

February brings lots of snow for most of the country and with it comes the dreaded task of snow removal. Shoveling your driveway is already a hassle; don't let it be a pain in the neck and back, too. The American Chiropractic Association suggests the following tips to help you avoid muscle strain and other injuries when shoveling:
  • Use a lightweight, ergonomically-designed shovel.
  • If possible, push the snow aside instead of lifting. If you need to lift, bend your knees, allowing the muscles of your legs and arms to do the work instead of your back.
  • Do not throw snow over your shoulder or to the side. This requires twisting or turning motions that can cause injury.
  • Take frequent breaks - a fatigued body asks for injury.
  • Stop immediately and seek medical attention if you feel faint, dizzy or have chest pain.
If after a few days you continue to feel soreness or muscle strain, it may be time to visit your local chiropractic office.

Holiday Survival Tips

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of what can be a hectic holiday season, and until we flip the calendar over to a new year, the chaos just doesn't let up. Since the added demands of this season can stress our bodies to capacity, we need to do everything we can to avoid letting the holiday rush get the best of us. Consider the following tips to help keep you and your loved ones stay healthy, happy and safe this season.
  • Wear shoes with plenty of cushioning in the soles to absorb the impact of walking on those hard shopping mall floors.
  • Wear layers because you may be going from a cold environment outside to a warm environment inside.
  • Instead of lugging around a heavy purse, carry a light backpack or fanny pack with only those items that are absolutely essential.
  • Take frequent breaks, but skip the designer coffee at the java stand and drink water instead.
  • If at all possible, leave your children at home.
  • Do not wrap packages while sitting on a hard floor-you're more apt to strain a muscle in this position. Instead, vary your position from standing at a countertop to sitting on a bed or comfortable chair.

How's your posture?

May is "Posture Month"

chiropractic-good-posture-b
The month of May is known internationally as "Posture Month," so it's the perfect time to celebrate a renewed commitment to health, longevity, and start new habits.

Posture has been linked to problems from back and joint pain to affecting digestion and even your ability to breathe deeply. Research studies show the truth in what mothers have always known: standing up tall improves our health.

We are creatures of habit. When we have an injury, our body will move differently to avoid pain. Over time, the body will adapt. Our body will create new habits. The brain adapts and adopts new muscles and joint positions even in the absence of continued pain. We believe we are standing straight because our brain is being told by our senses that we are balanced, even though the mirror shows we are not.
